Radio intereference from Airport?
Radio intereference from Airport?
One of our clients is having radio reception problems using Two way radios on their premises. They are based in Milperra which is right next to Bankstown airport.
They are using UHFCB frequencies with subtone in a simplex operation.
Is it possible the high RF from the airport is causing interference?
It is also a industrial area.
I know that the airband is AM VHF & UHFCB is FM so trying to find some answers.
Thanks, John.

Re: Radio intereference from Airport?
Airports and industrial areas have lots of potential rf interference . High power transmitters ect ect , and certain industrial equipment cause issues .
Have you scanned the general freq to see what's going on ?

Re: Radio intereference from Airport?
There are a lot of construction and transport companies in South West Sydney using UHFCB on private tones.
In particular If they are using the input repeater frequencies (channels 31-38) it would not suprise me that there is continual interference

Re: Radio intereference from Airport?
My question would be why is a company silly enough to use CB for their daily operations,, my mistake, I forgot its the cheapest option

Given the proximity and the fact that the VHF airband is in some cases a forth harmonic of UHFCB it is possible there is interference. Take the UHFCB frequency the company is using, divide it by 4, which should give you a frequency around 118, 119 or 120 MHz. You will probably find the result is a frequency used at the airport.
Several solutions and seeing ACMA are less than happy about commercial operations on UHFCB, especially when programmed into commercial radios, (some not all), obtain a PMR assignment. Or do some mathematics to determine if there is a UHFCB frequency without a harmonic at the airport and move to it.

Re: Radio intereference from Airport?
To be blunt; I would suggest to your client that they invest and not waste time with consistent intermod or in fact their own interference to other legitimate users in other frequency bands. The cost of obtaining an ACMA licence allocated to them on UHF freq ranges would cost them less than a $1k then $330 per year after that. why any commercial operation would even consider using UHF CB freq's is either not a profitable operation or they need their heads examined.

Re: Radio intereference from Airport?
We have a lot of customers (Hotels,clubs,pubs) which surprisingly are using UHFCB with tones. As customers want to go digital we advise to apply for a commercial frequency.
Frequencies being used on this site & using Russell's formula I can see the problem.
476.625 = 119.15625
476.700 = 119.175
476.725 = 119.18125
476.750 = 119.1875
476.775 = 119.19375
476.800 = 119.200
476.825 = 119.20625
476.875 = 119.21875
Bankstown Airport use 121.950 & 119.100 is a very common used frequency as well.
Thanks for the feedback, John.
