But hey, early days yet, and once the ambo switch over, it only takes someone in government or the commish to decide they want the same, and it will happen. This is NSW government, lack of forward planning and wasting money are their specialities!

Like it is going to stop ambos or nurses ringing talk-back radio programs? Really! I bet you guys still look under your beds for Reds! To think that encryption would bury anything is beyond paranoid, you guys need help. Opposition politicians & media don't depend on listening to a radio when they get private tip offs from insiders- maybe if you listened to 2GB or 2UE most days you might realise that. When will you get it through your heads... encryption is to stop the bad guys (a) listening and (b) transmitting/interfering. The next step is radio authentication- and that comes in a few years- and then say goodbye to all those stolen or "lost" or cloned radios... Few if anyone gives a stuff about people with scanners listening, but when you have w*nkers running around with handhelds & mobiles programmed with unauthorised talk-groups you shouldn't be surprised people in the agencies are irritated & looking to encryption as a solution.

Radio authorisation is already here. Aside from the government lies about privacy, their concerns would be far better addressed through authorisation rather than encryption.

To be honest, as an airband listener, I really couldn't care less if NSWAS go encrypted. The only time they are any good to listen to is when there is an air alert or accident. They give all the good info about casualties, aircraft type, damage and the like!!!! That's the only thing I will miss.

Authentication, not authorisation- and it is not currently available on P25 in current systems. It has only recently been added to the standard. Vendors indicate it is a few years away from being available here. Argue with me by all means but I got that straight from THE vendor. Government lies about privacy, what lies about privacy? In the longer term I agree with you- authentication makes encryption less necessary for those agencies not targeted by crims but that feature is not available yet.

I'm not arguing but I know a P25 system, albeit conventional, that is already using authentication. The system is up and running right now.

I don't know why you are arguing because my information comes directly from the vendor, so if they say it isn't available then it isn't available no matter how much you might think otherwise.

But I am mystified... you are saying that on a conventional P25 system the radio serial number (as distinct from a network ID number) is being sent? Is this a Motorola system?

Yes it is a Motorola system, and my understanding is that each individual radio identifies itself to the system. I also understand that this is done by way of the serial number. This apparently allows the radio to be excluded from the system at any time it is lost, stolen or otherwise not in the possession of an authorised person (eg vehicle servicing).

As I said before, I have no intention of arguing with you. I am only conveying the information I have received from our specialists and SOPs. Nothing more.
