I would say it is tied in with the introduction of the new Superstations concept and realignment for a new Sydney Metropolitan Paramedic Response Network.

I have trawled the net and this seems to be the heart of the changes. The document I was looking at is 6 months old and may have changed somewhat. The concept appears to be addressing ambulance response times by optimising the response centre locations

The superstation, known as the xxxxxx Paramedic Response Centre, will be the heart of the new Paramedic Response Network, where paramedics will go at the beginning and end of each shift. Branching off this centre will be smaller standby stations called Paramedic Response Points that will serve as locations from which paramedics can also respond from throughout their shift.

Using a modular format the superstation will have parking for 22 ambulance vehicles; administration, office areas and amenities; on-site staff parking; a logistics and storage area; and an external wash bay.

* Bankstown Superstation

Before heading off to work I heard the operator on Sth West Channel say, "all stations on this channel other than Bankstown to switch to channel 8" - That's the Far Sth West channel.

The change over was a confusing time even for the operators.

Urban Paramedic Response Points, may not be just existing Ambulance Stations to.

Can remember talking to some Paramedics about this 18 months / 2 years ago about this concept that was being proposed and the Paramedic Response Points. The talk was, some of the existing Ambulance Stations may be sold off if they are nolonger geographically central to the population response coverage area, which can be seen with some Stations on the fringe of the South West and North West Urban Growth Areas over the past 15 years. And that a Hospital Emergency Department Ambulance Bay, even a Local Shopping Center or Street corner somewhere may become a identified Paramedic Response Point given urban growth expansion.

It will be interesting, as we already hear Units being asked to head to ******** for Cover, and I have heard a couple of locations that I know the Local Shopping Center is the Paramedic's Preferred standby area as they can grab a Coffee, food or use toilet facilities while waiting for jobs to come in.

I've heard of similar things in the U.S. where crews start their shift and are assigned a standby location, I guess the idea being that cars are spread across an area rather than all gathered at the station, but this doesn't really sound like that, in fact it sounds like the complete opposite where they're concentrating resources rather than spreading them out?
