Anyone notice the new Wollongong comms RID

Post by Longreach » Thu Dec 15, 2011 8:56 pm

HI all,
Anyone notice it in your travels today. instead of the usual 207XXXX id's, i notice this one today is a 20078xx id?
Probably nothing in it but throws it out compared to the rest of the centracoms? EDIT or is the beginning of the move?
cheers

I have one of the disaster recovery consoles at Wollongong noted down in that range (first logged back in Feb with 84 hits)?

No, just means they are running on a back-up radio. 20078xx is a humble XTL5000 radio in the normal FRNSW number range.

Just to explain this a bit better... normally the Wollongong operator would have a pool of channels open on their Centracom (probably 301, 304, 305). Each of these talkgroup resources also has a "radio" ID in the 207xxxx range though they aren't a "radio". It is just a network ID. Now if for some reason they need to take the link to the NOCC off the air (maintenance, link failure, testing etc) they select "Back Ups". This gives them access to a pool of radios installed in the Comcen- at Wollongong they have 301, 304, plus the DISRECs, ground to air, RFS etc. What you would have heard/saw was the ID of one of these back up radios.

Cheers,

Richard

ah ok thanks for that, now for the next question

I noticed last night that i heard all the comms in my area via that one ID. how does the XTL repeat all those from areas like the gong and the PMR area?

cheers

Because that radio is patched to all the other networks via the Centracom. Any call that comes into Wollongong is looped back out via that radio. In this way one operator can handle all of the radio traffic without the risk of "double mic'ing" by callers from different radio networks. This is what we refer to as "patching".

Cheers,

Richard

Same arrangement on Talkgroup 10101 (patched in with 10102) and 10103 (patched in with 10104) this morning
"Sydney Comms" are using 2007xxx radios
