Callsign Octo 1 ?

Post by Mike Alpha » Tue Aug 27, 2013 6:53 pm

Today, callsign "Octo 1" was heard asking for a radio check from Sydney Firecomms.

A friend in NSWFR suggested it might be a unit testing an Octocopter for use in remote assist situations. One has been seen flying around the Light Horse Interchange recently.

I was also told MFB used one recently to help guide a crane in the recovery of the truck that crashed on the Bolte Bridge.

I asked the same question Garry, but was told there is no such boat anymore. You may be right though. Hoping someone here can confirm it.

They aren't training octopuses to put out fires are they. They would be cheaper than people.

Mike,

"Marine 1" Was sold off last year, but FRNSW still do have boats dotted around the state for Hazmat Jobs in in-land waterways. They use to . . . but I don't know if it is still in service or if it has been retired, but they use to have a Large Zodiac Type Boat in Sydney which used the callsign "Otter".

The boat would have to be close to 10 or more years old now, and may have been retired due to age

I'll ask the Manager for OpsComms on Monday and post back results.

Could well be correct Mike. I know the Melbourne Metro fire guys just got an octocopter for doing fire ground surveillance.

Sorry I completely forgot to write back. OCTO1 was used as a strike team callsign.
