Blacktown 70 heard on Shopping Centre Security frequency

Post by cartman » Thu Oct 07, 2010 7:20 pm

I am monitoring Westpoint Blacktown shopping centre Security this afternoon and evening
I am not sure if this is a local initative but I distinctly heard "Blacktown 70" (female constable) call up on the Security frequency in relation to an offender with a possible weapon (knife?).
"Blacktown 71" was also referred to but not heard.
The female was clearly a police officer and not a security guard accompanying them
Given the amount of incidents that happen around the railway station and the shopping centre precinct, I can only assume that in peak periods like Thursday night, police beat crews are assigned to the shopping centre and issued with security radios (in addition to their police radios) in order to speed up their attendance to deal with offenders.

Hi all, not the first time ive seen a police officer carry a second radio. around here out at Crookwell the police station has a Tait portable on loan from the RFS out there and ive heard Crookwell police come up on air under that callsign when on VKG they are Crookwell 28.
At jamberoo recreation park, Lake Illawarra LAC have a user pays arrangement with Jamberoo, and the police carry UHFCB's on their belt and are quite often utilised with problems there.
in relation to Westpoint, Blacktown police may have a user pays agreement with Westpoint?
cheers

Yes that would probably be why police called up on the security channel.
The police are used primarily for areas that are expecting problems so rather than drain LAC resources they bring extra officers on shift, and only use LAC cadged vehicles to transport offenders for charging etc...

I do not think it is user pays this time just good policing by loc commander. The use of radios to communicate with security makes for a faster response by police to maters that need their attention and sadly this is happening more in shopping centers and at events.Makes for some good scanning.

Blacktown LGA (local govt area) takes in some of the roughest and toughest parts of Western Sydney, as well as being the largest (population-wise) LGA area in Australia with around 280,000 including a high immigrant intake settling here and engaging many faiths, particularly Islam. I have been told by locals (including my uncle who use to work at the RTA Head Office at Blacktown) that it was a lot worse in the 80's and 90's and even up to the end of 2009 the Westpoint Shopping Centre area (especially the front entrance near the railway station) was a continual problem area. The Shopping Centre Security are pro-active and seem to have a zero-tolerance towards any misdemeanours. As Gus289 says it makes for good scanning. Plus you have the Railway station which is another "fun" area. Personally i never had any issues to date in the six months i have been here - most of my mental energy is spent trying to cross the high speed Bungarribee roundabout (because they don't slow down much). The pedestrian lights take an eternity to change.

Its very rare that police use security radios at any big events, what they normally do is have an officer at the same location the security control centre is so they can dispatch police from there.
I know this because i've spent 10 years+ working in event security at various venues...

I'd say its part of their taskings to patrol the shopping centre, and as you have suggested the Local Area Commander has organised with the shopping centre to have a security portable available for officers to use when onsite.
This used to be done quite alot at Sydney Uni

If i recall correctly you are at Penrith - you should get especially if you have line of sight.
I can hear Nepean Hospital at Kingswood so i presume it works in the reverse direction

Thursday night is when you hear the cops on the centre frequency, otherwise it is just S1, S2 etc
