VKG Tech "Radio 15" did a radio check using a GRN radio (755086) at 1639hrs today on TG 57440 and this audio was patched into DELTA. The police transmissions stopped then recommenced again about 5 mins later (I had a scanner listening to the encrypted audio on Zone 2 Vote 59).

I heard Radio 15 call early in the day but on this occasion I was watching Unitrunker and was able to tie in the transmissions by the one person on the two systems. About 10mins late Radio 15 called up first with a GRN portable (ID on GRN) for a test then with a police radio portable (only the generic 757501 patched audio id came up.

All rather interesting

Grant

PS If and when the police move over onto GRN it would seem from what I have heard so far they should have no problems running concurrent apart from the 1 sec or so delay that the GRN follows behind. I would say 18-24mths away at the very least unless there is a lot of money thrown at the problem and radios probably done piecemeal (as new radios are issued they move to the encrypted GRN talkgroup - no doubt running with OTAR, as well as the existing DES-OFB). Interestingly GPT seems to be a central site for a lot of channels.

I'm not sure it's coverage testing for future police use on the GRN. If the GRN goes full ASTRO 25 trunking, they will be using a completely different system, different bases and possibly different antennas, so it would be no use testing coverage on equipment that won't be around.

TG 57440 is a digital liason channel and I think they are testing the connection between the NOCC and VKG Radio room. In the event of a major distaster, this talk group will most likely be used to allow comms between police GD channels and the rest of the agencies on the GRN, whether they be analogue or digital.

The ESO 10 talk group that is already up and working is only a connection between a dedicated analogue VKG operator on Ch X and the GRN.

So I think once they have established the link between the NOCC and VKG digital channels works well, it will disapear.

They can do that without broadcasting anything at all... There has to be a good reason why they are decrypting and transmitting over an unsecure talkgroup!

Not sure what they have been testing the last two days but this morning I'm hearing HOTEL (Vote 32) in the clear off GPT

Grant

PS Radio 15 is annoying the daylights out of the operator on Hotel - numerous tests, switching between GRN and Police radios "1,2,3 ..." type counts. Said he would do it for the next hour or so (ie finish by midday)

At a guess based on what I heard from somebody (matt) who can track 5 systems at once, i think the tech is doing site configurations say gpt & chullora together, gpt by itself, gpt, chullora + pennant hills .... and so on ... which gives the best signal. Just checked Chullora then - it's punching out 57440 as well. Unless you are watching 5 or 10 geographical sites at a time it would be difficult to guess what the tech is doing.

Grant

PS IN fact I think that is exactly what they are doing .... working out which site combinations work the best for a given police channel. Interesting that GPT seems to be on a lot of the testing configurations .... not many 700 feet high buildings around. I think the end result is that a lot of metro sites will get the full 28 channels to support the loading.

Apparently I was barking up the wrong tree on the site configurations .... just Radio 15 driving around the Channel in question and affiliating to whatever site was in radio range, just like it happens for everybody else. Radio 15 currently working on Channel 2 (Blacktown, Mt Druitt and Quakers Hill) late afternoon
