VKG Rebroadcast/VHF Low

Post by nicho1s » Sat Apr 21, 2018 11:29 am

Hi All,

Within Sydney limits, does anyone know of any UHF (unencrypted :D) VHF Low rebroadcasts?
Also is it worth getting a VHF Low radio to listen to VKG? Given I'm on the very southern border of Sydney limits and all surrounding radio channels here are P25 DES-OFB.
How often do they use the VHF Low radios? I know of Tamworths extensive use, however that's not applicable for me being a solid couple hours away

Thanks
Nick

Nothing elsewhere.
Radio comms upgrades are guided by the policy to encrypt all Channels throughout NSW (Source: NSW Police Handbook - Public copy online)
The entire state is encrypted apart from Quebec (NW) and Zulu (Central West)
These two remaining channels are currently in the lengthy process of being moved from VHF Analog to UHF P25, then at some point when the techs are satisfied that any black spots or site problems have been dealt with, encryption will be switched on
I would guess maybe mid 2019 everywhere will be encrypted

Exactly what cartman said. No chance of getting anything except if you are lucky to pick something up through a gap in the blue mountains from lithgow or oberon. 1st of July this year is when the change over is going to start for the 3 channel's Q,Y and Z. It will b a 18 month program to change from vhf to uhf and to encrypt. January 2020 it should be completed.A lot of the equipment has already been installed at the radio sites. Just about all western region vehicles have uhf radios installed for uhf change over and liason with encrypted channels. Believe they are all getting the new Motorola APX 6500 and Apx 6000 portables. A refresh of the greater metro area Sydney/Newcastle/wollongong has seen all radios replaced with the Motorola APX 6000 and 6500..

I am wondering when they will upgrade from DES-OFB to AES-256...

Not with the rollout of these new radios, which effectively gives them (NSWPF/Telco) numerous long term high end options including P25 trunking, AES Encryption, OTAP and OTAR.

Incidentally its 10 years next month (May 2008) since encryption was switched on in the Greater Sydney Area, with a mix of old and new radios

So where is the Government's CCEP push to have the cops migrate to the GRN in all of this?

Mike. I have no idea, I think at this stage its just to upgrade the entire communications network so its the same state wide. Then one day, probably years and years away, they will switch to the Grn. But the cops like having there own network so I guess they will try and hold off as long as they can.

Well going by some recently awarded contracts, it looks like plenty of work is going on for the GRN transition:

Nearly $1 million for console upgrades (awarded to Motorola):

$14.7 million for new terminals (awarded to Motorola), that is a shit load of APX'S 8-)

$4 million for radios, accessories and services (awarded to Motorola):
https://tenders.nsw.gov.au/?event=publi ... 574AD0946C

$872,000 for NSW GRN voice recording (awarded to Motorola):

Not GRN but $1.2 million for the Western Region Digitalisation Network upgrade:
