Which Scanner, UBCD463PT or another UBCD536PT?

Post by JAFO » Sat Jul 22, 2023 6:11 pm

After I don't know how many years of use, my UBCD396XT has finaly started to die I think . . . Still picks up CC, shows TG when on hold but with no TG audio, and does not stop on TG's when scanning.

So . . . which Scanner as a replacement do the Brain Trust recommend - the UBCD463PT handheld or another UBCD536PT mobile/desk top for inside the house?

Garry,

Because they aren't a barbie doll or action figure and stay in an unopened box too never get used . . . and in the immediate future I can only justify the purchase of one lol

My 2 cents worth.

When in your residence the UBCD436PT can be attached to an external antenna generally without issue. Also it can be powered via the USB socket so becomes a defacto base unit. During the rare power failure you still have comms, unless of course you have a UPS of some description for the desktop. Mounting the portable in the house is not an issue as there are numerous mobile phone/tablet table mounts that can be adapted. A standard microphone hook is best for holding the UBCD436PT in place. A hint, if you do get a UBCD436PT swap the plastic bollard on the back with the metal one from your UBCD396XT. The metal is naturally more robust, just use the UBCD436PT screw to secure it.

Most vehicles these days do not have adequate room to local mount a scanner. Then there is the security issue of it being on display to anyone who decides to look. A vehicle mounted radio is limiting if you wish to go walkabout. The advantage is, that if mounted in an ideal position the display is visible to the driver.

A portable can be used in a vehicle with a limited amount of infrastructure. As an example, this is the set up in my vehicle. A RG174 BNC terminated fly lead to an RFI On Glass UHF antenna and a Mini USB lead to power the unit. The mount is a RAM with a microphone hook and a bit of sponge to prevent bounce. Security is not an issue because when you leave the vehicle you take the scanner with you or put it out of sight. No holes were drilled in any part of the vehicle.

This will be due to a Phase 2 voice channel, the scanner doesn't understand how to decode.

Yeah ok.

After reading your last did a little search and results go back to 2013.

Well thats a shame then. It looks like all our Aust 396 and 996 variants just became bricks as far as Phase 2 systems go . . . thus evolution lol.

Russell,

I use to have the 396XT paired to a RH-96 in my Navara D-22 when I had the Navara. Use to have the 396 behind the back seats and just unplug the 396 and take it inside when needed. Even after I sold the Navara, I continued to just use the 396 in our Holden Cruze on a microphone hanger on the dash like you suggested for another 18 months or so till I got my Patrol. I tried to mount and pair the 396 to my RH-96 Remote Head again in the Patrol, but was finding it difficult to find a in car power supply for the 396 after my old power supply died, so brought the 536PT for the Patrol.

So with a UBCD536PT permantly mounted and hard 12v wired into a dash pod in my Patrol now, I think as the 436PT uses a USB Plug for charging (I believe), I don't know I'd like the idea of trying to add another USB Powered Device, and especially a scanner into the car and mounted where it can be controlled by hand as a replacement to the 536PT, given how bulky/messy USB Cables can be. I would go another 536PT or no scanner in the car altogether.

One advantage to replacing the 396XT with another 536PT, if I have issues with my current 536 in the car, I can just swap it out . . . plug and play for the one in the house.

Only just able to see the 536 screen text now, so with my aging eyes, don't think I'll be going down the track of mounting a handheld into my Patrol again

For some reason I thought you were looking for a one stop solution, something for the car and for home. After I read your post again I see it was for home only. The 536 is, in my opinion better than the SDS200 so would recommend it all day every day. The only problem is again power interruptions. But as they are few, then the 536 sounds like the winner.

I programmed a 325P2 recently and was amazed at how good the sensitity was compared to the 436 and SDS100. Very easy to use, similar to the 396 series and it has an easier to read display.

An electronics shop in Wollongong is selling the 'AU' model which I was tempted to buy, but told by those in the know that this hybrid model can not be upgraded to DMR. https://madelectronics.com.au/uniden-ub ... l-scanner/
