Military Monitoring

Post by SandBagger1 » Wed Mar 17, 2021 4:09 pm

Hello I would like to encourage those of us living in this region to share what Military radio traffic you may have monitored.

Sunday just gone I could hear what sounded like Military or maybe very professional SES traffic on Talk Group ESO 1 (10010) off Mt Ginini NSWGRN site only. It sounded like a search and rescue exercise to me with reference to various government organizations which must have been involved.

Recently I heard two Army callsigns "Bushman" helicopters talking about inflight conditions on 256.5500MHz AM.

I can hear RAN helicopters callsign "Taipan" talk to Eagle Ops on 136.0250MHz AM out of Nowra.
Training ground West of Nowra "Tactical Frequency" is 296.300MHz AM.
You can hear "Taipan's" talk inter-pilot on 328.000MHz AM when flying around on navigation exercises.
123.450MHz AM is very popular with all sort of Military/Contractors and Civil pilots.

Have you heard anything?

Yep exactly as you described, plus what comes across the CTAF and Tower in Canberra.

And I forgot to mention whenever we have a visit to Canberra by the F35 Lightnings they seem to always talk pilot to pilot on 336.000MHz AM.

Was there any callsign observed for 336.0 AM?

So far I have heard Hunter and I don't recall the other two times. If you aren't aware here is a compressive list of Military Callsigns http://www.swld.com.au/pages/aus_raaf_callsigns.htm

Hi geodementia thanks for adding to the growing list. I have a list of NATO, US and world wide common UHF Tactical frequencies and it shows 282.8000MHz AM as a world wide SAR frequency. I will be adding this to my scanner to monitor, but I hope I never hear traffic on it. Thanks again!

I've heard training activity on 282.8 in the past, chopper to ship mainly, but being in Canberra not much chance of hearing the ship side lol.

Ok, depends on the altitude and how far out to sea obviously. But having said that I have copied the Learjets out of Nowra at FL270 clearly roughly 20 to 30 miles off Nowra on Airband VHF. Onetime I copied a very weak signal that sounded like Air defense training on UHF Tactical 363.0000 AM. At the time there was one Learjet off the Coast just south of Nowra and I know HMAS Brisbane had left Jervis Bay earlier in the day. Could be one to listen out for you never know your luck, I like to be 100% sure before I confirm frequencies. Plus my research on Google confirmed the Learjets have a UHF radio fitted.

Anybody else have anything of of interest?

We are getting some great information to share here, thanks for posting.
