One way of avoiding damage to the antenna.

When I worked for police radio, I came across a number of discrete antenna mounts. One was to take a Motorola NMO mounted UHF whip and insert it through the plastic inserts for the baby capsule mounts on the parcel shelf. With a tinted window, it was difficult to see the aerial. One drawback was the use of metal film tint and having 25 watts of UHF bouncing around inside a car. It does thing to the male reproduction organs.

Another was the use of slot antennas. They were basically a box, again mounted under the parcel self, however on this occasion part of the parcel shelf had been removed. Only the shelf mat remained.

Another was to mount a UHF quarter wave under the car near the spare tire well. This was popular with the feds.

Of course the was also the splitter on the standard car aerial for the VHF stuff. These amongst others that are still in use all have their pluses and minuses.

Normally in sedans you will have the metal body of the car under the parcel shelf which acts as a ground if your aerial is not ground independent.We mounted a 800mhz aerial in this way for one of our companies security vehicles back in the early 90s.More for covert operations.
