After looking on a auction website I found a digital notetaker a Sony ICD-PX720 with VOR/VOX
I found a short male to male 3.5mm lead in a box I had.
With a bit of fiddling around with the volume of the scanner and the mic gain of the notetaker it's works great. The VOX works well, it's fast to start recording then after a 2 sec delay the notetaker pauses.
I plan to test it out this weekend I am keen to find out what the battery life will be like on both the scanner and notetaker.
I have 3 modes to record SHQ - 11hr.50m- 192kbps HQ - 17hr.55m- 128kbps SP - 48hr- 48kbps and LP - 288hr.10m- 8kbps. I am thinking of using HQ or SP
I will need to find my double adapter to listen to the audio at the same time using headphones

I use the same notetaker to record the intercom whenever I go flying. It works like a charm and has excellent battery life etc

I was using a similar set up as you have, however, I now use an app call PureAudio on my phone and it works a treat

I brought a digital notetaker on ebay from china.Only problem was they didn't send me the VOX model even though the instructions said it was so have sent it back.Still waiting for the replacement. It's also good to have a high & low sensitivty selector as sometimes the sound cicuit can produce hash noise & make the vox false trigger.

I was really happy with the performance of the notetaker over the weekend I didn't need to change the battery at all. The scanner I had to change twice. Both worked well in <7 degrees I also found the my double adapter and was able to listen at the same time. Just needed a better VHF antenna

Ha John I ordered two things online from Hong Kong and only one item turned up thankfully paid with PayPal
