Yeah true - it can become an expensive hobby, as theres 2 bands to play with. C (large mesh) and Ku (smaller solid). Most newer decoder/set top units have 'Blind Scan' feature which will scan every transponder, but how accurate it is, is another question. I wonder if citibria has an idea if GNURadio is compatible with satellite data? Theres a few places around in AU/NZ with plenty of information and updates on finds, just last night for instance FOX8 on the Foxtel Bouquet was FTA for 12 hours or so. There was also some sort of Data being used for the WRC in Coffs not long ago.

But theres alot more than just TV up there. Just on the Optus C1/D3 bird, which 1.6million households with dishes on roof are pointed to have the following - 24 Ku-band transponders, 4 (+1) Ka-band transponders, 4 X-band transponders, 6 UHF transponders. (UHF links via the relay satellite will enhance UHF capabilities already employed by the Australian Department of Defence, and will be used for low data rate two-way voice and data communications. There are five 5-kHz channels and one 25-kHz channel provided via the satellite)

But I think the above topic was raised some time ago, and probably isn't the best idea to be discussing it in public threads.

GNURadio does work on satellite bands I do believe. At least I recall something about someone doing satellite stuff with it.

GNUradio is compatible with anything and everything..

And no, thats not some marketing statement its the technical truth. As long as you can write code, you are only limited by your coding ability.

I have a close mate that has done lots of work with GNUradio on the Optus sats using a downconverter and inexpensive RF front ends :)

In case anyone is still watching this thread, and was interested in how you can use Software Defined Radio to create a satellite demodulator (i.e. what citabria mentioned), check out the talk I gave at Ruxcon 2011 last weekend:
