AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX 2014

Post by cartman » Mon Feb 17, 2014 3:16 pm

Leading radio manufacturer, Simoco will supply over 800 portable radios, as well as system infrastructure and accessories to support this year’s Australian Grand Prix, to be held in Melbourne from 13th-16th March 2014.

Utilised prior to, during and post race, Simoco DMR radios will be used by the Australian Grand Prix Corporation and many contractors involved in staging this high profile event.

From their blurb

"It’s critical that organisers and contractors are able to communicate with team members, race marshals, security staff and other workers to ensure that the event runs safely and successfully. The fact that Simoco provides a reliable rental radio solution means that companies involved with the event can access high quality communications equipment on a short term basis.”

“Simoco also has proven experience in managing end to end communications at large scale complex events so can give expert guidance and 24/7 support when we need it.”

Simoco has been working at the site since late January when the Australian Grand Prix Corporation began to implement the first phase of operations to support the event build teams.

They have been rather aggressive with their sales lately. Shame they can't deliver on a radio system that will actually function on the GRN with trunking to conventional patching like they said their gear would... Admittedly Motorola are half to blame for not fully following the P25 spec but never the less Simoco shouldn't make empty sales promises.

I like Simoco radios, they seem a fairly robust design and are certainly easy to program, but I think their policy with regard to restricting sales of P25 capable gear is ridicules in this digital age.

There is so much P25 equipment around these days it seems stupid that anyone can buy a P25-ready XTS3000 off eBay for $200 or less but they can't give their money to Simoco, I think they're really missing out on a lot of sales in that respect? But that's a story for another day...

I didn't even know Simoco made DMR radios? Or are they just re-branded from another manufacturer?

It is all there own kit, mobile radio and repeater was developed in Australia and portable in UK or it may be the other away around and all made in asia but in which case it is there and they are working on code updates on a regular basis. The only issue is still no 9022 type head for there mobile radios which is a serious short sighted decision.
Don't like it, either get over it or retire

From the TV footage some of the F1 teams have some high tech Motorola radios on their belts.Nice LCD & quality microphone connections.
Presuming these are digital.

Almost all of the teams are using MTP850 Motorola TETRA radios, i think from memory theres only 2-3 teams using proprietary Kenwood Digital radios.
