Airwave Solutions Secures Supply of Digital Radio System Contract with Ergon Energy
by PRESS OFFICE on 9TH,NOVEMBER,2011
in AUSTRALIA, GLOBAL
A leading provider of integrated, secure and resilient mission critical communications, Airwave Solutions has been selected to partner with Ergon Energy to design and build their Digital Radio System Network.

This partnership is the result of a tender process by Ergon Energy to secure a Trunked P25 Digital Radio System in the Warwick/Toowoomba Area (leading to a state-wide deployment). The core network will be equipped an ISSI interface, that will allow dispatch, talk group interoperability and inter-network connectivity with other P25 compliant networks across regional and state boundaries. Airwave will provide Ergon Energy with a wealth of specialist experience in providing operational improvements to customers through advanced communications solutions.

To ensure all resources and skill sets are covered, Airwave have teamed up with Auria Wireless (Etherstack) and Tait Technologies. Auria are world leaders in APCO 25 Technology and have been involved in the development of the TIA TR.8 standards (APCO P25) for over 15 years. Tait are at the forefront of location services development for P25 network enabled terminals and key to the delivery for Ergon Energy will be the deployment of wide area location-based services for vehicles and staff, increasing the efficiency in operational deployment of field resources as well as increased safety to staff in often remote areas.

In the UK, Airwave operates one of the world’s largest and most complex public safety voice and data networks, providing a nationwide secure digital network for over 300 individual emergency services and government agencies. The network is engineered with extreme fault tolerance to ensure every voice call and data packet for the 250,000 users is delivered.

In Australia, Airwave along with Broadcast Australia, operate nationwide critical communication services under long term contracts with government. These services cover 99% of the population, supported by 2000 first-in-maintainers located close to transmission sites in remote areas.

Operating trunked private radio networks to the highest standard is at the core of the Airwave business. Airwave have built management systems and implemented ITIL v3 service management to specifically meet the demands of public safety service delivery. The management support of the Ergon Energy Digital Radio System Network will follow the same operational procedures that are ISO20000 accredited in the UK.

“Airwave is delighted to have been selected by Ergon Energy to deliver this exciting and ground breaking voice and data network. Together with our partners Auria and Tait we look forward over the coming months to providing Ergon with the mission critical communication services it needs to support its end customers in the field,” said Malcolm Keys, CEO, Airwave Solutions.

About Ergon Energy

Ergon Energy, as a Queensland Government Owned Corporation, operates as an electricity distributor, retailer and generator and services around 690,000 customers across its vast operating area of over one million square kilometres – 97% of the state of Queensland. Ergon Energy has around 4700 employees and a total asset base of $10 billion.

Ergon Energy’s electricity network consists of approximately 150,000 kilometres of powerlines and one million power poles, along with associated infrastructure such as major substations and power transformers. We also own and operate 34 stand-alone power stations that provide supply to isolated communities across Queensland which are not connected to the main electricity grid. Since August 2007, Ergon Energy has owned and operated the Barcaldine gas-fired power station along with its associated infrastructure. The power station supplies power to the main grid.

Ergon owns the Windorah Solar Farm, a $4,500,000 project completed in December 2008 (2008-12) producing up to 360,000 kWh of electricity a year, reducing the town of Windorah’s need for diesel powered generators, and reducing fuel consumption by more than 100,000 litres annually.

Just for clarification.

In general terms, Energex is the energy provider for the Brisbane Region.

Ergon Energy is the main energy provider for the rest of Queensland.
The closest Ergon Energy customer to the Brisbane CBD, is probably 70-80 km from Mt Coot-tha (Site 20), so it would seem that the Mt Coot-tha Site is primarily for testing by Airwave Solutions.

You might want to check that control channel, it should be a 12.5 kHz channel. 165.1900 is an old 15/30 kHz assignment. I doubt that it is valid.

You are correct, it should be 165.200. The setup I have in cairns is a $20 usb sdr stick and unitrunker. It looks like the stick is a little off in the VHF band.

Hi techman,

The RTL sticks are always off - the onboard clock's resonator is usually in the order of 50-100ppm out. If you run up SDR Sharp with the dongle, you can calculate the offset correction factor quite easily, then enter this value into Unitrunker under the Control > Correction field. This will then let you tune up the RTL using the correct frequencies.

I found one of my sticks is +6ppm out, so I was lucky. Also you will find the error gets worse as you go up in frequency as the base clock gets multiplied up, so does the error.

Cheers,
Matt
