No "problem" at all.

The police are doing coverage testing on the GRN to see if it would work for them.

My guess is that it will change channels every few days as the police techs move around and check different areas. Then once its done the channel will be unpatched and the police will be gone once again.

Cheers,
Cita.

I wonder why they are testing GRN's coverage. Are they thinking of moving to GRN?

The police have agreed to it as well, according to tech sources, mainly brought on by the decision by the World Radio Congress to make 450-470Mhz a telecommunication band worldwide, a concerted push at federal level for multi-state multi-agency interoperability and to eliminate problems like no OTAR capability currently and to stun stolen or lost radios automatically on affiliation. They would obviously have all the radios upgraded then to XTL5000 / XTS5000's. Encryption capability can be then explanded for law enforcement throughout the GRN footprint, much further than currently is the case.

Makes sense when you think about it.

Grant

PS The GRN would obviously require a massive injection of resources/funds/frequencies to rollout the extra demand placed by the addition of the police.

From what I heard, another big push was the cost of the Police Network. I was told the current monthly Police Communications budget was up around the $4.5M, a large portion of this includes costs associated with Transmitter Site Leases, Landline Rental and major Radio Equipment repairs and upgrades.

By switching across to the GRN, the Police will no longer have to pay out on Transmitter Site Leases, Landline cost and major Radio Equipment repairs / replacements, as that would be the responsibility of the NSW GRN, so even with the cost of affiliating all those Police Radios to the GRN, the police were still looking at possible savings of around $2M per month.

How about this....

Thnk of this scenario - what if instead of switching to GRN, the two networks were "consolidated" into one... surely theres plenty of NSW Police comms gear that could be converted to work on GRN?
