Not incorrect.
Quite simple.
Some ISPs charge for download bandwidth only.
Some ISPs charge for both a combination of upload and downloads.
Some ISPs have accounts that can do either.
So does not matter if your streaming to another server on its own, if your uploading data, you ISO may count this to your bandwidth. Upload data is upload data. I never said anything about bandwidth and the amount of users. Streaming to an independent server does save bandwidth, but its uploading all the time to the server. All the upload data goes to the server if 10 people are connected or no one. The stream is a constant bandwidth which is better then hostng yourself, which in this case you have to serve out to each user on their own. Hosting it yourself is simple to set up. Getting it to a server is a bit more involved, and in some cases cost money.
My point is it depends on your own ISP's account details. If you can get one that does not count uploading, then this is a big bonus. What you stream and what bandwidth is also a big factor. Simple mono audio uses much less, in the case of scanning streams, then ones with video or displays of some sort.
Speaking from experience here.

Just a rough idea for people, with my scanner streams I usually have between 4 and 12 or so people connected and sometimes have 1 or 2 on the audio only streams. I upload between 50 and 70 gigs a month. I don't do torrents and other things like that so 90% would be the streams.
I am on an Internode SOHO plan.

As previously stated thats all to do with the configuration.

I host the Internet streams for 3 FM radio stations now (ya, rly). They're all in much higher qualities than most the bands you're talking about scanning (stereo @ 128kbit). Each stream uploader site spends no more than 40gb per month in upload. Its very feasible to spend half that data or even 1/3 (mono @ 32kbit) to match the audio quality from a radio scanner. However in my setup I also utilize a 100mbit line in Canada supporting a couple hundred listeners in peak periods - we're talking thousands of GB here.

Well I changed my mind on not publishing my stream on forum sites... so here it is

http://fastdns.ca:8000/stream1.mp3.m3u
http://fastdns.ca:8000/stream1.ogg.m3u

If I had the USB cable I could let you all know what its tuning to, but it really isn't that hard to guess.

If anyone wants Icecast hosting - I have way too much web hosting infastruture - do ask.

i also host a couple of streams both of which go to radio reference. i still have an old stream too which some older members of scannsw might remember.(technically 3 but 2 are the same, one is a direct link one goes to radio reference) i can listen to both via my mobile phone too using either moodio or nokia internet radio. the both are only encoded at 16kbps.
have a listen
http://www.radioreference.com/apps/audio/?ctid=4349

the direct link sounds better but im starting to stray from it.

Not too shabby!

Although its a shame like myself you don't have the USB cable to send the channel label in the ID3 tag.

Another feature of Icecast you may not be aware of is "relaying". Ever considered running icecast locally, on your own computer, and have the remote/public server connect to you and relay the stream? On-demand relaying means when there is nobody listening the stream isn't being sent to the Internet - which can save bandwidth on your end.

Much like how I replicated/relayed your stream on my server:

yeah unfortunately both scanners (pro97 on the main, pro2020 on the aircraft/RFS stream) dont support tagging. there are changes coming for the coming digital though either to be a pro96 or a GRE PSR500. if i go with the 500 it will support alpha tagging, if i go with the 96 i dont think it will.
