Re: Trunk88
This may appear a little tongue in cheek but is actually close to the money ..
There are a few members of the so called scanning world who are technically quite astute ,, and understand more than .. welll more than what I thought a few years back.
After reading quite a few posts in this and other "scanner" fora over many years and speaking to / meeting some of the people ... please don't think "scanner geek" .. there are a few degrees out there and in also people who not so called "qualified" are quite astute and understand more than you think.
In my case, I was lucky to work with a smartzone system for many years and learnt heaps by osmosis but was still impressed by the understanding these so called scanner geeks do have.

Re: Trunk88
you obviously don't work in the real radio world. This was done over a year ago. ASK's can ONLY be used as a basic form of protection and password "protected" p25 CPS radios can be bypassed in under 30 seconds.ivahri wrote:Try cracking an ASK... it hasn't been done.
All Moto p25 radios can be flash/model whored and ASK removed or set at whatever you like.
Re: Trunk88
Yep, I don't work in the "real" radio world... I guess we will see what happens when the new network goes live, won't we? When all of the XTS3000s & MCS2000s are of no use let us see what the extent of bogus radios is on the network then.
I have a simple way to assess reality. Some people talk about doing things, some of us actually do it.
Cheers,
Richard

Hopefully they will be on ebay for next to nothing, so I can buy them and use for amateur frequecies

Re: Trunk88
I reckon the move to a full P25 9600 system will knock out something like 98% of the current bogus radios that are on there, however as BerryV has said, the new tier radios (XTS5000/XTL5000's) have been long since been hacked, so as these become more common on the used market and eBay, (and unfortunately stolen radios too) the problem will return *if* the new managers of the GRN aren't on top of things as Mal and Richard have alluded to.
In any case, I personally think its incredibly silly that someone would want to mess with a public safety network - why would you want to put at risk the lives of the very people we call to save our asses when things go bad (fire/ambos/police etc)
Richard, did you know that option Q361 ASTRO 25 9600 Baud Trunking is available for the XTS3000 and ASTRO Saber? Luckily its not that common, since I think it was only ever released for a 800Mhz network in America, but it is out there none the less.
Cheers,
Matt

All we need is a few 70cm P25 repeaters and we're done!

I would be worried about GCIO (network owners) who have overseen network operations, and dictated policy and compliance regimes for 15 years .. where has their secuirity management got them??citabria wrote:I reckon the move to a full P25 9600 system will knock out something like 98% of the current bogus radios that are on there, however as BerryV has said, the new tier radios (XTS5000/XTL5000's) have been long since been hacked, so as these become more common on the used market and eBay, (and unfortunately stolen radios too) the problem will return *if* the new managers of the GRN aren't on top of things as Mal and Richard have alluded to.
Interestingly, the new network manager (contractor to GCIO) and who is also the P25 supplier may well be seen to have conflicting interests .. would they be admitting that there is security problems with P25? How does the network manager oversee the P25 supplier?
Perhaps the fox is now running the henhouse?
or perhaps the network manager will submit a contract variation for P25 .. well boss the 42 million for P25 won't be enough, those nasty hackers have broken security and will will need xxx million extra to fix it
usual dislaimer .. my personal veiws only and not of my employer or anyone else for that matter
Re: Trunk88
Well Mal things may already have started changing since Telstra departed. Maybe some of us techs that sat back & as you suggested did not ask questions in the past are now doing just that. The proof of that is in the new security policy already implemented- an initiative of the techs. Time will tell but I can tell you I have a list of issues as long as my arm for us to deal with & the only feedback I've received from high above is to keep it up. No-one is telling me to butt out & no-one is patting me on the head to go away, I get the impression that they are very keen to get right what was stuffed up the first time. There are definitely problems to be resolved but what would you expect on any project of this size?
When it comes to foxes I wouldn't distinguish between Telstra & Moto at all. Both if given half a chance by a chicken will enjoy the meal. Maybe some of us "farmers" need to start firing the odd shot to give the fox a fright... I know I am.
Cheers,
Richard

I was aware of it but it isn't something you can easily get given that Moto no longer support the XTS3K.
