Spammers R Us

Post by Bigfella237 » Wed Feb 14, 2024 10:50 am

Regular visitors may have noticed that we've been swamped by spam over the last week or so.

I've deleted dozens of posts, banned a couple of user names and warned a couple more, but it's obviously going to be an ongoing nuisance. They simply register a new account and start over.

Unfortunately, we may have to start moderating new users' posts, at least for the time being. That sucks on a number of levels, not the least of which is generating more work for the moderators. We could require account approval before they can post, but it's impossible to tell who's a spammer and who isn't until the spam's out of the can!

In the meantime, if anyone sees anything that looks suspicious, please don't hesitate to "Report" the post and one of the crew will act on it.

Just a quick note to say that new members' posts are now moderated (and have been for the last week or so).

It hasn't stopped the spammers altogether (yet), but at least their crapola isn't being displayed on the forum any more, and hopefully they'll get the message sooner rather than later and move on.

Apologies to any genuine members who must now wait to have their posts approved, but mods are checking-in multiple times a day (well, at least I am, most days) so it should hopefully only be a few hours delay.

It's a necessary evil at the moment, I'm afraid.
