Cruise ship comms

Post by freqwaves » Sat Dec 10, 2011 2:59 pm

Just came back from a 10 day cruise around NZ.Wished I'd taken the scanner for some ship & port comms.Would have broke the boredom while staying on the ship.Did go to a informative seminar on how the ship works & got to ask some questions about radio comms.Below is what I foundout & observered while on P&O Pacific Pearl.
MF/HF DSC used (monitor Distress channels)
4x VHF Marine radios (monitoring ch13 & 16)
Satellite phone for making calls to landlines
On-board radio/phone interconnect low power repeater system
Crew & security using Motorola GP328 handheld radios
Ship crew also had pagers

This would explain the vast amount of Aerials mounted on the mast & roof of the ship.
Some passengers also took UHFCB handhelds to stay in touch with family if they couldn't find each other. One family told me reception was not good between decks which might be caused by the metal structure of the ship.

I am trying to pick up the bridge comms on a couple of large passenger ships as they come into Sydney Harbour this morning at 5-6am (19/12/11)

MV Volendam is listed on http://scanmaritime.com/frequencies.htm as at 2009 as

(tx) 467.5250 123.0 for Ch 1 Bridge Ops - however all I am hearing is bursts of Mototrbo as it closes up on the overseas terminal.
Due to my location with line of sight to the city and the height of the ship I am fairly sure the digital transmission is the ship itself.

MV Pacific Sun is listed as (tx) 467.8000 71.9 for Bridge Ops. Still outside the heads waiting for the Pilot Vessel

I presume all the frequencies are registered overseas as I couldn't find anything registered under P&O or Carnival Cruises in ACMA.

you will find some of these freqs are issued to Land Mobile.

Have a look at 467.525 for example on ACMA.

Will be on the Sea Princess tomorrow, just had a look at http://scanmaritime.com/frequencies.htm and listed a few channels for me to keep an ear on, got some last seen dates with that site too, might help cartman with the Dawn Princess later in 2012.
