27Mhz use??

Post by Mike Alpha » Thu Jul 05, 2012 3:32 pm

What's the go with 27Mhz CB radio now days? I was an avid 27Mhz CBer in the 70s and was wondering if it's worthwhile getting back into it. I like the look of the GALAXY DX 959

Anyone here using 27Mhz regularly?

Mike

The new uniden bearcat cb looks pretty flash. Our new trucks all come with 27mhz and 477mhz radios from factory, not that anyone uses them but.

Hi Mike,

Even though I have been a ham for over 20 years I still use 27mhz. The nostalgia factor is high as I used my first am 23 channel midland as a 16 year old nerd. I've bought a few old cb's on eBay over the last few years and have one in my second shack (workshop in the back yard) and it is always on 16 LSB when I'm in there. Activity is spasmodic but when the band opens it is fun and a good indicator that 10mtrs is open.

Interestingly a lot of contacts that you make turn out to be also hams, fruit doesn't fall far from the tree :)

I'm think of getting one of these from the USA

Hi Matt,

The other half has accused me of going through a tight ar%es mid-life crisis... I've just bought a Uniden Washington from South Carolina... always wanted one of these since I was a kid and this one should have unusual audio... just kidding about the audio! Even if it rarely ever gets fired up it is just a great looking bit of kit.

Cheers,

Richard

Hi Kev, that's a nice rig. Digital and all... Will wait for reviews to see how it performs.

Hi Richard,

I've always wanted a Washington, could never afford one when i was a kid but i did by a brand new President Grant Mobile which from memory cost me about $300 in 1980. I think the Washington was a couple of hundred more. I bought a mint President Grant a few years ago on ebay, but still looking for a Washington.

I also have one of these in mint condition:

Hi Kev,

I found mine on ebay going for $110 Buy it now... in virgin condition & fully tested & refurbed (pots cleaned etc). I think most of us who were young during the CB revolution looked at the Washington as the ultimate in CBs. My other half just rolls her eyes... It will cost me about $100 to get it here but that is why I have an account with My American Shipper- saves me a fortune in freight.

Funny how you have the 13-886... we had one of the Midlands with the phone style handset brought into our workshop. They would have to be rare now.

I've got a mark 1 Super Panther that I bought for sentimental reasons as I had one back in the late 70s- early 80s. I might sell that now before my place turns into a museum.

Cheers,

Richard

Found this great website dedicated to CB radio in Australia. http://www.ozcbradios.com/ Lots of pics and ads from the 70s.

I even found a pic of the rig I ran as a teenager growing up in Melbourne. http://www.ozcbradios.com/cb-radios/rad ... 9-gbs-5000

I've still got copies of "CB Action" magazine which has a few reviews on the old 27mhz CB radios.
