UBCD-996T Decreased Signal Sensitivity

Post by JAFO » Thu Nov 20, 2008 4:49 pm

Hi all,

Well for a couple of months I have experienced poor radio reception with my car’s AM/FM Radio, so on Monday I tried to connect the cars AM/FM Radio to the same aerial system as my Scanner, now I seem to have Decreased Signal Sensitivity – about 10% with the 996T.

Sound wise not that bad, but while at home the Signal from my closest GRN Site: Site 8 Glenbrook 7.2Klm away should be booming in and was giving me full signal bars on the 996T, now giving me about 4 out of 5. Even the Kurrajong GRN Site some 27Klm away use to boom in as well, now it struggles to register on the 996T Signal Meter.

I don’t know, didn’t think connecting the AM/FM Radio and the Scanner on the same Antenna System would do any damage, But now - well having different thoughts.

So, Did I stuff up?

Any ideas?

It has not done any damage to your scanner. Basically car radio antennas in general, are highly abused and don't make the best scanner antennas. They are tuned for VHF mainly and not the best in the UHF band.
Best bet is to go back and give your 996 its own dedicated antenna.
