Hi folks,
a question for the tech heads:
I'm looking for a simple "black box" audio to ethernet (IP) module that as
a minimun has:
tx and rx audio
bi-directional signalling IOs eg can be used as carrier detect / ptt
a serial port at 9600 or higher would be nice
I have found a couple of units on a google search, Barix and
Digigram/Pyko, and am wondering if anyone has found / or is using other
types.
Typically these sort of units would be used as point to point intercoms
with "door bell" & "gate opener" IO contacts, or point to multi-point PA
or studio distribution that has an inercom / orderwire in built.
It seems these type of units could be used as a simple "private" VOIP
network with radio connections without the need for PCs to do the
conversion. A full blown unit such as an Omnitronics IPR100 designed
speciifically for radio sytems is on the order of 3 to 4 k$ and you would
need 2 or more.
A Barix Annuncicom seems a much simpler cost and a new item on eBay was
around $400. Haven't looked at the actual manufacturers cost. It is a
specific 2 way intercom product with bi-directional signalling.
http://www.barix.com/Annuncicom_100/421/
also look at the Digigram product:
http://www.digigram.com/products/produc ... _key=16500
The Pyko In and Pyko Out are designed for 1 way stereo distrubution but
both have a 2 way "orderwire" and bi-directional signalling.
So, any suggestions?
If you can read between the lines, I am looking at low cost "private" IP
linking for repeaters etc.

Low Cost Audio Over IP
Re: Low Cost Audio Over IP
At one of my clients who is a community radio station, we've been looking at high quality audio with low delays transmitted over IP networks.
Some of the equipment for this can be in excess of $10k
However, Linux's netjack2 is potentially a software solution that can achieve the same thing. I'm in the process of testing such an environment with great success - we're using two PCs at each end with a homebrew failover device that connects to the serial ports on each machine and detects crashes and switches the audio sources around.

Re: Low Cost Audio Over IP
Hi folks
thanks the comments. The dbltek unit looks good. The units I mention above are around US $500-ish, hoprefully thid onr id s bit less.
I'm looking for a PC / computer - less solution and hence the back box approach, and off the shelf supply.
