Last time I heard a backburn going on a RFS person talking on the GRN said "have you got a National Parks radio" so I would say they are still on VHF.

I came a across and NPWS personal in their car a few months back in Sydney northern suburbs, judging by the antenna they using on vhf. I have never logged them only occasionally hear them during fire fighting ops.

The reception of these frequencies comes with alot of background noise so they are very distant from my location in Campbelltown area.
One report was from the Blue Mtns area, another today from the fire down around Goulburn (Mt Robert).Firespotters in the air using these frequencies also.

I'm using a discone antenna (D130j). I'm in a fairly high position in Campbelltown also.

John,

Most of those are some distance from your location, but a discone should do OK, reason I was asking is many people try to listen to midband VHF on a UHF antenna with poor results.

Midband does sound very different to UHF too.
