Quantum Paging in Receivership

SA bought and built a paging network with the GRN, and the paging transmitters are collocated at GRN sites, and use the same backhaul.

Given that the commercial returns on running a pager network only get smaller from year to year, reckon there's much chance of NSW doing something similar?

Not while there is a commercially available option. Telco have never, to my knowledge, expressed an interest in getting into the paging business but have endorsed funding to improve the RFS network. I'm doing some work with RFS currently and we are installing dual VHF (148MHz)/UHF arrays so that a single antenna can be used for both PMR & paging (with both RFS & FRNSW= and others- multicoupling their services to them). It's all about "small steps" towards proving that greater shared infrastructure is workable.

Was checking the ACMA database and noticed some new RFS frequencies licensed.
It was the frequency and emission designator that was the interesting part

Is the RFS setting up a paging network in the Government MDT band given the recent events?

More likely to be P25 PMR. ACMA likes to use F9W for mixed mode FM/P25. Being a narrowband channel, it's too narrow for POCSAG, which is 16K0F2D.

420-430 is part of the new "government band", and is no longer limited to MDTs.

Wonder why they picked Griffith and surrounds, of all places to start rolling out P25 PMR.

Low risk option in case of teething problems? RFS aren't exactly run off their feet out there during fire season.

From a trip out to Hay a couple of years ago .... it is flat, flat, flat .... very few hills especially the further west of Griffith you go

Yeah, I've got family out that way. Easiest place in the world to build a radio network!

You can key the Narrandera CB repeater with a portable for about 40km in each direction pretty easily. (Getting in over the top of the music players is another issue.)

Yeah thats the test area for P25 PMR. its supposed to be in use shortly. keep your eyes peeled for them a lot more areas are going that way.

FRNSW pagers were all reprogrammed by this morning... I know a few techs who will long hate the beep-beep beep-beep noise... probably still hearing them in their sleep...
