I was originally searching for any on-line weather stations like the ones that the Blue Mts City Council have installed for their Springwood and Katoomba depots.

I came across some sites that suggest some sort of automated weather network across Sydney

Does anybody have any idea as to whether these are part of the weather bureau network or some sort of amateur hookup between individual stations

I have been trying to get my head around what it is ... i thought it might have been the water board telemetry network but i think it is just private citizens who hook their weather stations up to the internet ... on a US Florida-based network called Citizens Weather (CW). Some of the sites are unreliable (especially wind data) but some there look like they are accurate eg:Elanora Heights, Gerora etc ... what i would expect in gusty weather. I found other sites as well in the ACT, Victoria etc.

Mystery solved. I am surprised Kev has not jumped in on this one, considering he is into this.
APRS = amateur Packet Reporting service. This is used by amateur radio operators. APRS is used as you said, as a telemetry type of service. It uses packet radio standard AX.25 standard whic is used by amateur radio operators around the world. Weather stations are only one use for APRS. Many use it also for GPS tracking and other uses. These APRS stations can be put on the internet even for everyone to see.

Be careful with your sources of weather observations. A bad weather station install means inaccurate observations. Take BMCC Katoomba - their station is situated on the roof of the council chambers, right next to air conditioning ducts which reflect light at the station, causing the temperature to be as inaccurate as +10C on a sunny day. However typically its a bad install on the wind guage - which should be mounted above surrounding buildings, trees, etc.

The BMCC sites use Davvis weather stations, I do believe they have a short range 433mhz wireless link to a PC.

BOM do have a paging network for their weather stations... but I do believe the majority of their sensors are not electronic and require the regular attention of BOM staff. http://web.acma.gov.au/pls/radcom/clien ... _NO=435100 has quite a number of licenses, surely they use them all for something...
