They have a slot every Tuesday from 11am to do a "proficiency drop" on Rickarby's Field to the north of the base. They do these drops when the aircraft has not has a mission in the previous 7 days. Doesn't go for long but impressive to watch from the fence west of the fuel farm.

Not necessarily. It *works* and has done for many years. GRN has been problematic, despite all the money that has been thrown at it. Additionally, makes it easier for the switch between VHF Fireground and Fire1 for the tanker crew leaders. Then there is the cost - XTS8000 is ~$4k - thats 5 VHF Icoms...
