FRNSW P25 PMR Network Developments

Post by ivahri » Wed Oct 24, 2012 11:18 am

Hi all,

Just giving those who are interested a heads up that the licencing of these have started to appear in the ACMA database. The initial areas are sites in the Far SW of NSW and the Monaro.

For those curious about the emission designators- the links selected are Mimomax and employ dual polarisation to increase the effective throughput over a narrow (25kHz) channel. All links are currently 450MHz.

Cheers,

Richard

Gday Richard,

I'm curious what brand of infrastructure they are using? Are they using Motorola GTR8000s? or a different brand (Tait?)

Cheers,
Matt

Hi all,

The base frequencies have started to appear- note that they are licenced by Telco so you can't just search by FRNSW licences.

The first system is on order and if all things go well will be on the air in a little over a month from now.

Hi all,

Factory acceptance testing of this first network has been going on all week. Everything has been working well with only minor bugs needing fixing. Install starts very soon- those able to monitor it should like the audio. Our links have got heaps of capacity so the audio is very good. Should finish testing today so the gear will be boxed & shipped to site within days.

Cheers,

Richard

Hi all,

Just an update on this... The big switch over should take place towards the end of this week. Two base sites have been upgraded to P25 so far with the balance of the sites to be done this week. Operator console configs have been loaded to included the new network & emergency call testing was successfully completed last week. For those interested in the IP performance of these networks- latency between the network router ("far" end) & the console router (Comcen end) was measured at better than 30msec, intersite latency under 10msec. The radio links are giving us about 130kbsec capacity so we will have full duplex audio to all sites plus have enough capacity to support a 2nd agency and/or a 2nd tactical channel in selected locations. The test radio profiles for the XTL5000 and XTS5000 radios are being tested & appear to be working correctly.

Hopefully the weather will be better this week... on Wednesday Bombala was feeling like winter with a howling wind and sub 10 degree temp. Not a fun day for anyone, let alone riggers.

Cheers,

Richard

looks like tait were also happy with the testing, in fact, they say you were "very excited"

Thank you for the support the MiMOMax team provided last week during the FAT of the Fire and Rescue New South Wales P25 radio network. The testing went particularly well and the customer was very satisfied and impressed at the seamless integration of the MiMO linking with the Tait TB9100 base stations.I, myself, was very impressed at how easy the installation and connection was and managed to configure and test these for the first time without any trouble. Operating the links at 16QAM, we managed to achieve data throughput in excess of 129 kbps and 190 kbps at 64QAM, which the customer was very excited about and network latency through multiple link hops was well under our expected results.
The demonstration of the M-DAP feature was particularly important. We tested the link at maximum capacity and all P25 traffic was transported with priority and without any packet loss or artifacts of any kind, which was crucial to the success of the acceptance testing. I will certainly be recommending MiMOMax as a fast, reliable and easy linking solution and hope to work with you again in the near future.

Thanks for posting that... not sure I would have used the word excited but I was certainly impressed. To think that it is now possible to run multiple high quality digital links over a single 5kHz channel is something I wouldn't have imagined possible a decade ago. The other thing is that 130kbps is at 16QAM- if we opted for 64QAM we could achieve 200kbps if we wanted to sacrifice fade margin... Running at 16QAM gives us another 10+db fade margin on the links- so the network is even more robust but still has heaps of capacity.

M-DAP is also very effective... it makes a noticeable difference when carrying P25 traffic over these links.

Just another update on this one... most of the Monaro P25 network is now on the air. Mt Perisher & Crackenback sites switch over in coming days. The base voting works extremely well & coverage has noticeably improved. User feedback has been extremely positive.

Cheers,

Richard
