Was at Curl Curl the other weekend the volunteers patrolling where sporting the Hytera handhelds.

No, but there are a few more weekends to listen before life saving in Sydney pulls up stumps for the 2016/17 summer season.
Their last patrol day is April 25 (Anzac Day) according to their website

Anyone know why sometimes your scanner doesn't want to decode the DMR signal & acts like a analogue scanner? Seems to happen a bit on the SLSA channels I'm monitoring.

Have you set the mode to digital only for that frequency, and not left on all setting ?

3 modes for frequencies.

All .
Analog only .
Digital only .

There are alot of transmissions that are non-voice which may cause this to happen. Some Regions have GPS LRRP set on their radios. Which region are you listening to ?
