NSW Rural Fire Service - Radio Exercise

Post by matthewn1983 » Sun May 27, 2012 11:28 am

There is a stack of activity on several RFS channels this morning, at least 4 channels going flat chat with radio checks. Few GD OPS channels and ESO channels also operating. (Those who take notes of RID->Units are in for a busy morning)

Lake George Zone do radio checks for all brigades and all appliances/portables on PMR every Sunday morning anyway but the date for their migration to the GRN is good to know, I'll pencil it into the diary for next weekend.

Thanks nella!

This was a 'capacity test' organised by RFS Ops Comms. I forgot the exact number, but the aim was to have around 200 users online on at the same time between 1000 and 1200, doing constant radio checks on multiple channels to simulate a busy GRN network. Realistically, there were around 120 users from Cumberland, Hornsby, Warringah, Sutherland and Macarthur. These were the only districts I heard, but we were on GD65 for the test - so maybe more districts were involved on other channels. My understanding is the test went very well and districts are pretty happy with the performance.

DOH! Another hour to wait... Just announced in the general messages that Lake George will conduct a radio test for all units on PMR from 0900 (in progress as I type) and then migrate to the GRN this morning followed by another test for all units on the GRN from 1000

Well that was an experience, new RIDs coming thick'n fast but that's one more RFS migration done.

I've never seen so many button-pushers in my life... I recorded over 7 minutes of nothing before it even started! Somebody needs to tell them that you accept a channel change with the [HOME] button not the damn PTT?

I assume Lake George will use the next three months to upgrade their PMR network to P25 while most are using the GRN which should be interesting once it's complete too.
