HUNDREDS of shoppers and workers have been evacuated from a major Sydney shopping centre after a fire broke out in the roof.
NSW Fire Brigades says around 50 firefighters from 10 fire stations were called to the blaze at the Westfield shopping centre at Mt Druitt, in Sydney's west, after fire broke out just before noon (AEDT).
The fire service received a triple-zero call at 11.57am (AEDT) on Saturday, said media spokesman Superintendent Ian Krimmer.
Fire crews found a fire in the roof area above a clothing store.
"Several hundred shoppers and workers have been evacuated as a precaution,'' said Supt Krimmer.
"You can imagine, at a shopping centre on a Saturday morning, it's hard to put a count on it, but certainly there were hundreds and hundreds of people.''
The fire was put out in about 30 minutes but "there is extensive water damage throughout the shopping complex,'' he said.
"We currently have 50 firefighters from 10 surrounding stations cleaning up and the operation will take most of the afternoon.''
There were no reported injuries and the cause was yet to be investigated.
