The system still functions surprisingly well on 1-2 bars of GPRS reception as well.citabria wrote:No - according to the article it's based on Telstra 4G service.

Sydney South West to go Silent
Re: Sydney South West to go Silent
That's a big call.Mr Flibble wrote:Those MDT's were shit full stop. It's only in the last few years that I think hardware has gotten to the level that it needs to be rugged, easy to read and operable with gloves on in a truck and the HP Toughpads being used are definitely best of breed in that field.
The software is also being vigorously tested, designed and customised for FRNSW rather than shoe horning some application in to "Do the job".
It won't be without it's issues to begin with but it will be way better than any Roadside Assistance or TAXI MDT.
At the end of the day, FRNSW are a NSW Government Department and the quality of the gear purchased is based on the "very best of the very cheapest gear available", you just have to look at the crap turnout gear we are supplied with from china, even before our turnout gear was fully rolled out it had to be re-called to fix the manufacturing fualts in the garments.
Now Given NRMA and other Roadside Service Groups around Australia have been using MDT's for some 20 years now, are highly member service delivery focused on getting their members back on the road as quickly as possible, have selected MDT's based on the need to be used by motor mechanics on the side of the road, with greasy hands, in wet conditions, and need to access motor vehicle fault dinostic information . . .
Hmmm . . . . it's hard not to be skeptical

I wouldn't say this is always the case though - those Motorola APX6000's are about as good as it gets! They also support Phase 2 trunking which will double site capacity if they ever decide to upgrade the infrastructure..JAFO wrote:At the end of the day, FRNSW are a NSW Government Department and the quality of the gear purchased is based on the "very best of the very cheapest gear available"

Well the SW went live with their MDT's connected to ESCAD about two weeks ago. The talk is, the rollout of MDT's across the state into the fleet will commence in August and take about 18 months.
