P25 off Transit Hill is suppose to be used by police for the Port Macquarie Triatholon, so i am told.
Sounds like there is a comms truck stacked with p25 portables for temporary deployment travelling to these country venues.
Tamworth Country Music festival is also covered by temporary P25 according to the locals.
While I think of it I understand that at the Bathurst 1000 police use P25 encryption on 6 channels as these crowds are more volatile

This is a list I have put together for the Mid North Coast Police. I have been trying to get my head around what Alison posted, what Phil has posted elsewhere on the Aussie Scanners forum ("...receiving P25 from North of Kempsey through to just north of Halfway Creek ...") and what is currently listed in the ACMA database (which is what are approved licences but may not reflect the current situation). I would say that the digital currently being heard is a temporary setup for the Car Rally. However it is also likely to be the start of the move across to P25 longer term. In Port Macquarie there are no strong P25 signals being heard locally near the Hastings River (where I am currently). It is likely that I will have to make a number of amendments as people feed in what is happening

Hi Grant,

I'm not sure that you are aware that there was a government directive to support the car rally due to its tourism benefits. Just because Police are rolling out a system for this does not mean anything for the long term, any more than it did 2 years back when they did the same thing at Murwillumbah & Tweed Heads. This event comes around every 2 years over 10 years. NSWAS & NSWPF purchased or rolled out systems to take potential load off their normal networks.

Cheers,

Richard

No, not aware of the government support for the car rally, beyond the fact that they used the GRN in earlier years. I think what happened up near the border was partly to avoid interference issues from the Qld digital system - it was analogue on the .125khz splits last time i checked it out in Casino (eg 468.8625). So if the new frequency allocation is for support for special ops like the Port Macquarie Triatholon etc that would make sense.

Interestingly, there has been talk for quite a while, going back say 5 years that the UHF northern expansion (Necastle to Qld border) of the Police Radio would be via GRN. A while back, a contractor was engaged to research coverage and possible sites. The initial pass was 40 sites, later expanded to around 70. Given the imperatives of IPART, and measures to save the goverment money, why would the police be building there own digital network expansion when GRN could be piggy backed for greater efficiency?

Another lost opportunity, or is there more to it?

Maybe the Police are hedging their bets
The licences on the ACMA are dated April-May 2010
Presumbably like the rest of us, they have decided that the North Coast expansion will take a long time to come to fruition
But if that is the case why are they doing the same thing out the south-west eg Yass, rollout of new frequencies in areas already covered by the GRN footprint
Sounds like they still want control of their "private" network even when forced to move

Just heard VKG say they are separating channel Oscar and the special operation channels. It appears the digital channels are for the rally.
Also sound like channels Oscar and Papa have been combined.
I'm still recieving channel oscar on VHF in the Coffs area on 78.3625, 78.4500, 78.5500, 78.6375, 78.2875

Thanks Allison for confirming that...

Grant the reason for the Police going to GRN on the North Coast is that they were seeking a very large allocation to replace about 70+ sites that are life expired. It made more sense for those funds to be put towards trunking AND providing the coverage that the Police require. Other areas could happen but there isn't the financial imperative (or the coverage) to drive it. They are going to the GRN on the North Coast, I had it confirmed yet again only yesterday. I have good contacts Grant, believe me!

Cheers,

Richard

There are reports appearing on the Aussiescanners.com forum that a number of (but not all) "Papa" sites (Northern Rivers) are now transmitting P25 while still maintaining VHF analogue

467.8875 Tx St Helena Byron Bay
468.2875 Tx Springbrook Qld
468.8625 Tx Parrots Nest Lismore
469.0875 Tx Mt Nardi, Lismore
469.1375 Tx St Helena Byron Bay
469.3875 Tx Razorback, Tweed Heads
