Channel Alpha operator in clear.

Post by Mike Alpha » Wed Jan 20, 2010 8:51 pm

For those who miss listening to police transmissions, channel Alpha operator has been in the clear for the last few days. On both Channel 23 and 116.

It is strange that they do that, given the paranoia that surrounded police going over to encryption
Often the bigger the event the more likely that dispatcher will be heard in the "clear"

I could be shooting in the dark but from what has happened over the last 18mths since encryption it seems that the "clear" option is selected for occasions when there are

a) equipment problems
b) a major event occurring and the "clear" option is selected as a added safety measure for officers involved
c) a major event occurring and the "clear" option helps the media with information as to what is happening

Anybody who can add or make corrections to that is welcome to post

The other possibility is portable radios - ie. the ones officers actually wear. I do believe there is a number of these still in use that do not or partially support encryption.

I've had UHF 046 come in as unciphered P25 a few times this afternoon. But I'm too far away to hear this chan/repeater reliably.

When you say channel 23 & 116... I take it you mean the channels as defined on http://www.radioz.info/wiki/Police_UHF ?

The reference you quote is the Queensland Police Channel listing and doesn't correspond to the NSW Police Channels
There use to be a pretty accurate one on Scan NSW website but it doesn't exist anymore.

Zone 2 Channel 23 = 468.4000
Zone 2 Channel 116 = 468.2375

Both are Channel A for Alpha with the same input frequency 458.9000Mhz

Zone 1 = Analogue
Zone 2 = Digital

Some elite units have access to other zones .... specially designated discrete channels

Any idea when this started and how long it is expected to last?

Oh really? You wouldn't have a copy of a NSW Police chan list? The reason I ask is I can't locate anything near complete.

Just been digging around a few sites and it does seem to correspond in the fact I haven't yet located a channel supposidly used by the NSW Police that isn't on that list. The source of that list though is from QLD.

The frequencies are more or less the same, bar 467.8375Mhz
The channel numbers aren't the same
On the queensland channels Ch 23 = 468.1125 and Ch 116 = 469.2750 ie they don't correspomd to the NSW Channel pattern

There are a number of sites on the web when you google for it
The best one is

http://members.optusnet.com.au/nswessca ... anapco.htm

However it is about 18-24mths old
There are some changes subsequent
Eg in my area (Channel Echo) 469.0750 has been detached from Vote 22 (468.3750 and 468.550) and now operates as some sort of special ops or back channel (was being used as recently as a week ago) but the frequency no longer appears on the ACMA for the Sydney metro
Got no idea who uses it (they are encrypted of course) and there is no transmitter info available on ACMA.
That is the problem with Police frequency listing .... it is becoming out of date.
I was listening this afternoon to the Channel A dispatcher and I heard callsigns like CDB 10, CentralMet 536 ... which are new to me

same thing happens every couple of months in the ACT sems to be when the keys are getting swapped over, only lasts a day maybe 2. last one i heard was the APS channel(airport security) on (NSWP allocation) Z2ch45 i think? good listening but the encryption gives you the irrits.
That is the problem with Police frequency listing .... it is becoming out of date.
not too bad in the country, little inaccurate sometimes but works well for me, the city is the main prob for me in relation to ch x, am always trying to work out the tx locations, have a rough idea anyway? dont really care on the city police stuff anymore,
cheers
