I am not getting any encryption noise. Maybe someone pressed the wrong button.

Around about 1211hrs I heard via the RR broadcast feed a couple of cars attending jobs or coming back on still in the clear, VKG (clear) answering a radio test, a few encryption squiggles and then was that ... it went very quiet on the feed

Heard the same.
Would it be that if VKG enables encryption at their end the Uniden 996 doesn't squark the encryption noise for a second therefore you only get silence.

That happens on the receiving end, all radios and most scanners nowadays mute the audio instead of letting the squiggles out, I think the last scanner I had that didn't mute encrypted audio would've been a 796D.

You can force a radio to unmute by loading up a key with the correct KID but with the wrong variable, the radio thinks it has the correct key and unmutes.

Yeah thought so.
I might have broken the stream.
A few minutes after the encryption started I remoted into the server to stop the Windows media encoder stream.
I just logged back in and am getting screen corruption so I think the sound card drivers weren't happy. This would affect the one on RR too.
I am going to rebuild that server in the near future.
Anyone listening on a physical scanner? Are there still many cars in the clear, is VKG still in the clear?

I have a Uniden 796 scanner with a discriminator tap fitted - its squawks its head off with squiggle noises

The early GRE stuff did the same. Wasnt till the 800's that encryption was muted or skipped.
Was a fairly smooth changeover here one minute gone the next.
Cant wait to see all the cheap digital scanners appear on ebay cos theres nothing else to listen to.
cheers

Now that I am home I can see why the stream went completely quiet for most of the time.
On my other Uniden 996, the other day when Far South 704 was encrypted I got the normal second squawk then silence with ENC on the display. Now all I get is silence with ENC displayed.
On my HP portable I get the second or so squawk.
Anyway, I have been scanning for 15 years and I still remember the one of the first if not the first call sign. It was Shoalhaven 17. The first local call sign was Eden 26.
One of the last I heard now was Merimbula 25. Fun times and great memories.
