Can hear Brisbane's ABC 612 in Canberra tonight

I'm new to HF/SW/MW listening but I'm thoroughly enjoying it. I just started walking my way through the commercial AM broadcast range tonight and discovered that I can hear Brisbane's ABC 612! It was quite noisy (and faded periodically) on my R30 with stock antenna, but it was definitely there.

Not a bad effort Alex. One to try for and it appears from time to time is NewsTalk ZB from Wellington in NZ. I think its 1035khz.
I hear it from time to time here in Goulburn on not much more than a car radio sometimes quite strong. Usually hear it when the SBS station in Wollongong is weak.
Easy to pick, the enzed accents are a dead giveaway, the SBS station is in a foreign language.
You will get other stations, the ABC stuff on the lower freq's are pretty easy given they are running high power like 50kW.
Cheers
Matt

Thanks Matt. I’ve spent a number of years listening to only trunked systems and I’m enjoying expanding this hobby into HF/SW/MW listening too. The Icom R30 gives me that opportunity and I’m discovering that my SDR dongles do too albeit with hit-miss results. Regards, Alex

Speaking of NZ, I’m listening to a Radio NZ National broadcast tonight on 9700 Hz which is supposedly targeted to the Solomon Islands according to their website www.radionz.co.nz/international/listen. I’m very impressed by the Icom R30.
