RG58 - Where to buy?

Post by Scotty » Tue Jan 04, 2011 10:30 am

Can anybody suggest where I can get RG58 in Sydney with a thick outer braiding? I got 40 metres from Jaycar yesterday (only needed 20m!) but it is crap, with the outer braiding being sparse at best, and I'm sure it's having an adverse affect on reception.

I finally got a chance to hook up a UHF base antenna off the TV mast yesterday and am finding the reception is now worse for the GRN than with a little 1m metal whip off the gutter.

Cable like this (thick outer braiding):

As opposed to this (crappy thin outer braiding):

Any help appreciated.

You can also try RF Industries at North Rocks.

Rojone are also very good.

I have used both and have no issues with either. Both have a range of "RG-58" type coax that includes various dielectrics and "foil" type coax where there is braid + foil shield, very good for long runs of UHF applications. If you have such a long run would you consider another lower loss cable such as RG-213 or similar?

RFI don't sell to the public, you have to purchase through an RFI dealer...

Oh yeah, ooops RFI does require you to have an ABN/ACN... sorry forgot about that!

There is also Benelec too in Mascot.

Christ, 20 meters of RG50 is a total waste of time on anything above HF, let alone 40 meters.

PLEASE think of the children and get something decent!

I ended up getting RG213 as opposed to RG58 (I thought of the children citabria!).

Instead of treking around town I bought some off eBay. Cost $2.80 a metre, was shipped quickly and arrived by express package post 2 days later. Seller was 'bozz56' or just search for 'RG213' and he should come up. I got all the plugs from him as well (N, PL259 and BNC) to save looking around for them in shops.

The cable is of good quality and I installed the whole thing a couple of months back. Works a charm.

Something worth considering if you're after some RG213 and don't want to trek around town looking for it.
