Otherwise you can use a multiband mobile telephone aerial, the long thick black type. Better than a discone. But a dedicated aerial would be the preferred option.

Thanks guys. I am happy with the discone for the time being at least.
One problem though, since I have got the receiver I can't get REX, I am sure its nothing at my end as looking at the plans leaving Sydney REX doesn't appear there either so something has happened to them.
Anyway I will try and set it up to contribute to FlightRadar24 on the weekend.

jaskel, do you submit to flightradar24.com ?

Recently I've been toying with a RTL SDR USB stick + RTL1090 app. The cheapest ADS-B receiver to date. I just need to improve my antenna when I next get the time. Was looking at using a USB balun to put the USB stick in the roof cavity, so the coax to the antenna is only a couple metres.

Today, I received an aircraft on my ads-b that displayed the image of a plane on my screen (as per normal) but the aircraft had a series of blue rings around it. Can any of you tell me what that symbol means please

Noticed that a lot of surface vehicles are appearing (and disappearing) on the flightradar24 feed of Sydney Airport via ADS-B, MLAT and WAM. The id actually states "ground vehicle" so they are not a plane. Logged their id and a search of google aircraft forums has identified several of them, including the perimeter security patrols (which become obvious when you click on them ... the white line shows where they have been). When I left Sydney last Tuesday morning there was a SNP patrol car on the perimeter road at the end of Runway 34 Right (southern end of third runway)

What an excellent idea, why not add them for conflict/collision avoidance, kudos to whoever thought of that one!

Its a similar thing to AIS in Newcastle, the helicopter that flys out to the ships has AIS fitted but not ADS-b

Logged Tony Robbins plane leaving Sydney this morning at 1.56am
On Flightradar24 it shows up as GLEX
On 16right.com ADS-B live information showed a corporate jet N304CC leaving 1.56am with a Mode-S code of A32E63 being tracked by MLAT
I was actually aware that he was leaving at this time so i knew the period to look at
Did a query on Flightaware on the N304CC which then returned a reply that Tony Robbins Productions has requested this plane not be tracked
However it stills shows up on Flightradar24.com via the local Sydney MLAT
There is a blurb here on it (without disclosing the client)

https://www.flyvictor.com/aircraft-oper ... xrs-n304cc

As soon as the plane was outside 16right.com MLAT coverage the plane for all intents and purposes disappeared (though I am aware of where he was going, as i was at the function he was attending)
