Katoomba Gas Leak - ALDI

Post by criten » Mon Feb 01, 2010 12:36 pm

Well the smart construction guys at ALDI on Waratah and Katoomba Sts have ruptured the 4 inch gas mains again.

So far I've counted 5 stations in attendance. ICV is responding. RFS have responded Central 4 and several appliances. Ambos are on scene. And it took the police about 25 minutes to show up.

ICV never made it to Katoomba. Neither did the Media officer until it was all over.

I heard about this today, the RFS sent out a message on their news group telling people to keep away from Katoomba, must have been pretty serious!
rfs-bluemountains-information@googlegroups.com wrote:Good Afternoon,

NSW Fire Brigades are currently dealing with a major gas leak in Katoomba.

The area between Parke St, Waratah St, Katoomba St and Lurline St Katoomba is currently closed and several hundred people have been evacuated. Any persons intending to visit Katoomba are advised to avoid the area for the next few hours.

Any further enquiries should be directed to NSW Fire Brigades or NSW Police.

Four Units from the NSW Rural Fire Service are currently assisting the NSW Fire Brigades with evacuation operations.

Regards...
My wife does a fair bit of work in & around katoomba (elderly home care etc) so I messaged her with the warning, but she was doing jobs in Springwood today.

Not only did NSWFB get into BA as they hosed down the leaking gas mains... but they equiped their staff with ear protection as even from 100m away the sound of escaping gas was quite loud. I could barely hear customers talking to me at my work - shortly after it ruptured.

Apparently the gas mains ruptured on the sleeve used for the last repair. There was an excavator directly above the leak - but I'm unsure if it was caused by the excavator or a bad repair.

It'd also appear that ICV did make it to Katoomba... I saw it yesterday parked out the rear of 343 station.

I'd hope they would, as at my work we had a gas leak that shutdown and entire street and the multi-story car park...

The idiot maintenance guys wanted to go in there without BA to turn the leak off, but i told em not to even bother and to wait for NSWFB to come in with BA to do it as the gas would have caused some serious problems for their health especially since it was in a confined space.
