Vertel set to upgrade to the Kenwood Nexedge digital system

Post by cartman » Mon Jul 27, 2009 7:42 pm

If you have been scanning the 490Mhz band recently you may have heard another strange data sound on 493.2750 over the last 4-6 weeks and now also appearing on 494.7000Mhz.

It would appear that Vertel is now showing its hand as to the future of its LTR trunking system and maybe it's conventional rental frequencies. The noise is almost identical to the Nexedge digital protocol called NXDN, developed by Kenwood and Icom. When one reads the literature on NXDN you will find that is the natural digital progression for analogue LTR systems supported by Kenwood

Tune into 493.2750 (Tx Centrepoint Twr Sydney CBD) and 494.7000Mhz (Tx Horsley Park), then have a listen here

it appears to be good technology as i was looking at it as an option for my work since they are so anti nswgrn.

Its got its advantages and disadvantages, for a company that has alot of rental radios it makes alot of sense but for other users who are semi-happy with their system but need increased functionality it meant having to rip out all the existing gear and purchase all new radios/repeaters.

Already being rolled out in Melbourne by the JRD group with 2 sites in high locations (i recall reading somewhere on a victorian forum about 469Mhz)
GPS & Telephone Interconnect to be added later this year
Radios are reported to be 1/4 the cost of APCO25
According to the tariff list published, network costs $50 per radio + $10 connect fee + $4.50 per talkgroup.

Vertel must be setting up to trial the network at the moment .... they will need more than 2 sites to cover Sydney, so I would expect to hear more of the same digital signals to pop up at Ingleside, Razorback, Hurstville and Dural

thats sounds about right but according to the guy i was speaking to at Gencom about these radios, they don't use the open source p25 standard they use their own flavour of p25 which may cause problems when interacting with other equipment that adhers to the p25 standard.

Correct - NXDN is *not* P25 in any way shape or form.

It shares some similarities - Its uses C4FM modulation and a DVSI vocoder (AMBE is opposed to IMBE)

*but* they are not compatible with each other at all.

NXDN Digital can now (ie mid October 2009) be heard on four (4) frequencies in Sydney
Three are Vertel and one is Star City Casino

470.7250 Star City Casino Tx Pyrmont (low power)
488.5750 Vertel Tx Dural
493.2750 Vertel Tx Sydney Tower
494.7000 Vertel Tx Horsley Park

It is becoming apparent that control channel 493.2750 and 493.6500 Mhz are both connected to the same NXDN network at Sydney Tower, after hearing both channels active at the same time.
Suspect (actually more of a guess) that at Dural 488.575 (control channel) and 488.775 are related frequencies

Citibria suggested to me off-site that the NXDN may in fact be simulcast.
I think Matt is right
Heard all 3 NXDN-noise sites transmitting a conversation (ie the drone noise changes to a higher pitch) which then only appeared in addition on 493.6500 in the 488-495Mhz band that I scanned at the same time
So I think 493.6500 maybe the voice frequency in this trial.

Found another NXDN system today ... Gencom Mt Sugarloaf 163.3125Mhz is the data channel making the NXDN racket.
Probably using the same "Mtrunk" frequencies that were in use previously

I think I have just found another NXDN user - University of Technology - 486.7875 5w - analogue only a couple of weeks back. Belting out NXDN on the one frequency only
