This may explain what it is,

...The P25 Solution Centre provides an environment that allows visitors to test and verify the equipment and applications from multiple vendors, and also confirm the value of the options available in the Australian P25 Communications market. This is made possible for customers through their participation in live demonstrations of equipment from multiple suppliers working together within an integrated environment as specified by the user as well as the ability to configure radios from different manufacturers, to then use on alternative manufacturers infrastructure – again as specified by the user.

So the system we were trying to work out a few months back was perhaps the "Harris P25" system being tested?

yeah exactly, especially since I know for a fact that when you go upto the top of the Brown Building @ North Shore Public Hospital ... you can get line of sight to Kurrajoing, Horsley Park and the city.
I'm not sure what the situation is like with the 2 new buildings they have there but thats not my problem anymore

I think if memory serves me correctly there are some RF Problems in that area, as the choppers used to have all their comms cut out when they were flying within 200metres of the helipad there but when they landed they had them all back online..

I'd say the site is running very low power considering it is only for testing stuff on location. From what I've read in the above link, the site seems to be for the testing of P25 equipment interfacing, interoperability and hardware connectivity more so than RF range testing.

I thought the same thing, then I thought "Why mount it on a huge TV tower if its just for lab testing only use?"

If it really was just for testing stuff on location, a 1/4 wave with 5 watts in an RF chamber would suffice, but instead its mounted on Gore Hill tower going through a BA80 Binary Array..

Doesn't make sense to me!

It is only at a height of 30 meters though. The TV channel TX antennas on the Gore Hill tower are at 150 meters or so. At 30 meters, the Chatswood CBD, North Sydney and RNS Hospital would be affecting the transmit reach of the signal, maybe even making it directional. :?

rns would be definately restricting the transmission path of the site, especially since i believe the new buildings they are building are going to be taller than the old brown building...
