New GRN Antenna Polarisation Method ????

Post by system_tech » Fri Jan 04, 2013 4:09 pm

Seen at the Knights Hill GRN Site this morning.

There is no other UHF antenna on the mast so this appears to be the only antenna for the site.

Hopefully, site coverage is not suffering "too" much :-)

Apparently the UHF stack broke it's moorings before Christmas and this is the (hopefully) temporary repair solution.

Failure? Nah! They stole the idea from the Yanks... see the photo...

Taken by me at Hoover Dam back in 2011... and it is deliberate.

Cheers,

For anyone that has stood under this structure I was astounded by the noise the wind makes blowing through this huge mast.

I still can't get my head around why they have done it anyway. It can't be working as it is... and why wouldn't the rigger have put a temporary SMD up? It seems screwy to me.

Hey what is 20db between friends?

Cheers

I don't know, you have all missed the point.

This is the new method of communicating with aircraft and ground stations at the same time. It is known as bureaucratic polarisation. It moves in mysterious ways!

Certainly a bit screwy ... one SMD for Rx and another SMD for Tx would have been better.

I wonder if GRN NOCC have advised agencies of the compromised coverage at the site? If Richard is not aware, perhaps not?

Politics aside, I was astounded to see the situation. The colleague I was working with was actually on site to see the original problem / failure and was removed from the immediate area as there was a danger of the antenna stack falling. Professional curiosity has me wondering what the heck is going on.

Edited to add: I did get my binos out to see if could find individual replacement SMD's, or any other temporary antennas but couldn't see any.

Nope, no notification. I've sent them an email about it...
