That I find idiotic as the whole idea behind a volunteer emergency service is you get out of the service what you put in, and turn up when you can..
Surely even in a volunteer emergency service organisation there is a certain minimum level of committment that is needed? If they don't have the personal discipline to attend then maybe they will be of little use when they really are needed. We had a little drama here at 5am this morning and had to get the RFS boys down- at a God awful hour of the morning to deal with something non-fire related they came in droves... now that illustrates committment.

I don't see the parallel with the issue being discussed. This is an internet forum for pete's sake, no-one's life is hanging off what goes on here.

Richard,

I agree there is no comparison between. I was giving an example in response to another post in here

I'll use the SES as an example of my discussion as i've been involved in it longer, there is a minimum requirement to attend if you wish to do courses eg General Rescue or Storm Damage that is setup by SHQ and is non negotiable.
That I fully support, but proviiding your qualified, attend callouts and attend training when you can there isn't an issue as far as i'm concerned... as i was once told SES doesn't pay your bills so they cannot demand 100% attendance

soupbones, i'd agree with your comments too totally... unless you have a discussion board that has like 30,000+ members deleting inactive members isn't going to free up much space on the server.

Is there an option in phpBB to send every member a PM in one go? If it is possible, a PM could be sent to every member or every non-active member, asking to confirm their registration. Give them a few weeks to reply and if there is no response, delete them!.

Hi Mike,

Can I ask what benefit this achieves? I'm puzzled by what is driving this whole issue. I quite often look to the bottom of the page to see how many are on line at the time and rarely, very rarely, do I see more than 3 or 4 registered on at the time. Really... I know this is none of our business anyway... but again I ask Grant what he thinks taking inactive members off will have? Is it going to suddenly make this forum more active (can't see how) or interesting? Maybe if Grant justified the need for this & took it up with the forum owner might achieve more than us debating the pointless!

Cheers,

Richard

It doesn't matter to me either way. My suggestion was just for the pro-deleters to fairly clean out the member list.

I'm no phpBB expert, but I'd say technically it makes virtually no difference at all how many non-active members are registered to a forum. As Soupbones said, there would be no loading up of the server to slow the forum down and the non-active member information wouldn't be a source of spam, or viruses or anything like that. And I don't think the forum gains any benefits from having a lot of members.

To some it might just be a psychological thing, like an electronic cleanout of things unwanted just so you don't have to worry about them anymore, and that's fair enough.

It's all up to the forum owner of course and he may have completely different opinion.

Hi all,

Personally, I don't have an opinion on this issue.

As said above, having many members would have no difference to server loading or anything. The only downside of having all these members is that it becomes an issue for tracking spam members. I'm constantly scouting the member list and finding new members who register with well-known spam addresses (porn, sex, hack, -related) and their IP's match up to a forum spam filter on some site (forgot the link). Removing inactive members would allow me to monitor this much easier considering there will less to look at. Not only this, but it would help out other members in finding a particular member without sorting through pages of inactive members.

What I will do is see what options I have within the Admin CP, decide and advise. I do believe it offers a 'prune inactive members' function. It seems more likely than not that a clean-out will be necessary eventually.

Cheers.

yep agree with you there mr admin....

finding spammers i found was easy i'd just block *@domainname, and xxx.xxx of their ip address so it made it that bit harder for spammers

The question in my mind is that membership of a group has responsibilities as well as privileges.

If we go back to previous forums ... there have been three or four major forums prior to this group where the same key folk have mixed since the Olympic Games time .... and the most glaring thing to me is that people are contributing less and less.

One has to ask the question why?

Hi Grant,

I'm sorry but what responsibilities? What privileges? You have to be kidding! Sorry Grant but I have to say it- get a life! This is an internet forum and I think you are now taking things way too seriously. As long as people behave themselves with normal decorum then they are fulfilling their "responsibilities". I don't owe you or the forum owner anything other than courtesy, and that goes for anyone who chooses to spend their time reading. If you think compelling people to contribute will improve things- it will not. All it will do is make people like me switch off as the forum gets filled with fluffy posts intended just to keep the senders from being classed as inactive.

Do you want to know how to make this forum or any other forum active? People like you (as you are the one who is complaining) need to act as facilitators- ask interesting questions, bring up subjects that are likely to catch readers' eyes. Have you thought Grant that the reason forums go quiet is because people get bored? Honestly- if I ever suffer insomnia I'm going to open up this discussion because this topic is a classic example of why forums go quiet.

Cheers,

Richard
ps. Nothing personal- I know you are a good bloke but you are way off beam on this one!
