'Walkie talkie' app Zello tops App Store during hurricanes

An app that enables people to have live conversations in large groups is being used as an unofficial rescue co-ordination tool during the US hurricanes.

PTT apps and similar have been around for years and never really taken off. Zello has been getting enough media lately to possibly change that?

I really do wonder how reliable the cellular networks are during incidences like this.
I suspect not very due to power outages water/wind damage and network congestion.
Zello is an excellent app. I use it for streaming scanner audio the vox settings are a cool feature.
Probably find CB radio more useful in an event like the Hurricanes as they are open to communicate with everyone in range.
