Re: Remaining Dick Smith store closures
That is such a shame, not because the stores were anything special toward the end, but just because of the history.
Dick Smith (the person) was a visionary in getting earlier generations involved in electronics, communications and computers in general, inventing and making stuff for ourselves became an Aussie trait there for a while. The stores at the end are/were just another retail chain withering under the onslaught of online shopping.
I hope Dick now gets the chance to buy his name back, even if he does nothing with it. I bet he's shaken his head in disgust more than a few times over the years at what they did to his empire?

Re: Remaining Dick Smith store closures
I was working there from 1996 to 2004 as a casual sales guy - and even as far back then, I remember the day all this started... Woolworths management decided that the original Dick Smith people that built the company with Dick himself all had to go, so they were retrenched one by one and replaced by people installed by Woolworths. Of course, Woolies being woolies really didn't understand what attracted people to DSE in the first place, and so they set about transforming it into a JB HiFi competitor.
The stores themselves used to hire their own staff - in particular they wanted HAM operators and technical types that could troubleshoot and solve issues. The old guard knew that staff like that attracted return customers and word-of-mouth referrals. Woolies then started up a big HR department that would do the hiring themselves... That was when we started to get some pretty average workers into the shops..
Then the product ranges changed... etc etc etc.
Luckily for me, by this stage I had finished University and I never had to work in retail ever again, thank goodness..
Cheers,
Matt

Maybe some discounted UHFCB radios & the odd Uniden analogue scanner could be on sale for anyone on the lookout for one.

Was in there on Saturday and they had a sale on, signs on most products with 20-30% off but original price was way inflated to start with, they really must think we are stupid.

Trying to get as much money for the creditors & whats not sold will end up being liquidated at auction houses.

Bought a apple lighting charge cable for $14 was $22.
What is with those plugs and cables they don't last as long as the USB mirco.
Chatswood had 4 uniden 5w handheld uhf's (no price tag was not bothered to ask) and some .5watt twin pack.

I wonder if Kogan will take the remaining stock in stores & sell it online as they continue to host the Dick Smith website.

Noticed that the Dick Smith store in Penrith on Mulgoa road has still got some aerials on the roof. (Discone, HF long wire, UHF verticals) Possibly from when they did radio demonstrations.
