Home Security (DVR)

Post by Chrisco » Wed Nov 14, 2012 3:19 pm

Has anyone got a home security camera and hard drive setup (DVR). I am looking to buy one for Christmas, I have looked at the Swann branded one from Dicky Smith & online and also Jaycar also sell a different brand. I need at least two camera set up and online viewing would be good.
any feedback would be fantastic.

Buy a QNAP NAS, should look after all the storage and provides a web interface.

I use an PoE IP camera that records to my server and uploads stills to the cloud between certain hours if movement is detected.
Probably not as easy to set up as the Swann system but I can monitor the surveillance area on any computer and on my phone when I am out.

If you want to go cheap & don't want to run a computer 27/7 then there's small DVRs on ebay that record onto a 32gig SD card which can be read on a PC with windows media player.
1 or 2 camera inputs.Drawbacks are no online viewing & when card get's full it starts overwriting from the begining so you only have maybe the last 2 days of viewing at most.

I am just using a cheap TPlink 4 port 100mbit PoE switch which is then fed into my main TPLink 16 port gigabit switch
This pic here shows it. Its the one with the red cable going from it.

let me know if u need help, I do IP cameras as a job.

Forget crappy analogue and swann crap, use IP cameras and future proof yourself and get HD video 100 times better than swann.

Its the difference to thinking someone is there and being able to ID them.

I have several HD IP cams here and the picture are stunning :)

I know pretty much what there is to know about this stuff so feel free to holla for help :)
