Icom IC-7000
Hi Guys,
I've got my sights set on one of these babies and I'm wondering if anyone here uses one and what they think of it?
Cheers,
Matt

Re: Icom IC-7000
All I can say is - wow.
I setup my IC-7000, connected it to a tuner, then to a simple dipole tuned for 20 meters, first two contacts I had were in Croatia and Italy on 20 meters. Unbelievable. What a beaut little radio!
Cheers,
Matt

Can your neighbours still watch TV when you talk to Croatia? LOL
Hope so, then again, stuff all on the box anyway..

Re: Icom IC-7000
It is isn't it Matt? I upgraded from an Alinco DX70 which really is a basic performance radio and couldn't believe the difference in performance particularly on receive. I just use an off centre-fed dipole and I don't have a problem, and I now have confirmations on all bands from 80 to 10, except 30m. So many contacts comment on the nice audio and I listened to a recording made by a dutch op of my transmission & had to agree. Glad you like it!

Re: Icom IC-7000
Since the biggest dipole I can fit is a 20m centre fed 1:1 on my balcony, I needed to find an HF antenna that would work in a small space and cover a wide range of HF frequencies.
Its the age old dilemma for HF - decent antennas are always massive, but then I discovered the Magnetic Loop. I have to try one and see how it goes, 40m to 10m continuous coverage, and its tuneable with narrow bandwidth (great for rejecting QRM since it works like a narrowband preselector).

This is what I am thinking - Only 1 meter in diameter

Re: Icom IC-7000
Finally got the loop antenna up and installed now. I have now contacted Hungary, Italy, Croatia, all with great reports of my signal.
Also had a nice chat to a bloke in Ballarat who said I was belting in down there at 20 over 9! All with 100 watts through a funky antenna!
After playing with UHF/VHF for 15 years or so on and off, this HF thing has really got my interest!
Cheers,
Matt

Good on you Matt... looks like the mag loop is a very good option for confined spaces. Were these contacts on 40 or 20? I love my wire antennas but then I'm lucky I have the space.. I've been playing around down on 80 but my aim is to get a decent antenna up for 160m- I have the space but I'm trying to work out how to get more height.
