Uniden UBCD996

Post by pks » Sat Oct 11, 2008 7:57 pm

I've just purchased a 996 but have yet to receive it. However it does not come with a serial->scanner cable. Uniden wants $49.95 for it and was wondering if there's a cheaper alternative.

The socket on the 996 seems to be mini-USB so is it possible to use any conventional USB->mini-USB cable? If this doesn't work, I might order the USB-1 but the site state its compatible with BCD996. Can anyone confirm if it'll work with the UBCD996?

Cheers

Yes I use a USB-1 which I got imported form the states and it works fine. This is probably the better choice for you.
The port on the scanner is a serial port, and even though it uses a mini USB plug and socket it is not a USB socket, so a straight USB to mini USB cable does not work ( I know I have one and have tested it out ).
Being that the scanners interface is serial nothing will work that is not serial based, so in this case, you need a serial tp USB converter. The USB-1 which is sold in the US for the 996 is the one to get. Its cheaper to buy then getting ripped off at the till bu Uniden for there $50 serial cable.

Thanks for your help :) Another question in regards to the rear serial port. Will a NULL modem and gender changer work?

I have not tried it but I believe so, thats if you want PC control from the rear serial port. This por is mainly designed for you to hook a GPS up to it.

Try it and find out. It can only work, or not work... ;)
