Voice links mate. One runs from here in Goulburn to Bulls Head in the ACT ON 44.690mhz.
The Yagi's are impressive to look at.

Thanks, will remove them from my Utilities scan list.
Some run on the outskirts of Sydney, Kurrajong being one place.

They're the actual voice channels the 40mhz stuff is point to point.
The NSWEN (FMR. Transgrid) network is pretty quiet down my way, you hear a slow Morse ident every now and then but very little activity.

I am interested to know why they use 40MHz links?

Sean if I remember correctly the network is a pretty old one, they wanted to get maximum distance for their dollar, so opted for 40 MHz links. Right from word go they have been a problem, mainly with skip from the US and Asia causing interference. Because of the commitment and extent of the network the cost of replacing the links with something more suitable would be huge, so they have put up with the limitations.

I would suggest as newer technology such as LTE is rolled out they will disappear from VHF in every sense. Nothing certain on that just a guess.
