The red lights on the exterior would almost certainly mean they are using night vision goggles. Normal nav lights would cause flaring in the NVG, rendering them useless.

Yes they would. They would also be using a discrete frequency for air to air comes between the aircraft. This probably won't be encrypted, if you can find it it. Army have a huge number of VHF low band frequencies to choose from, so good luck getting the right one at right time! you

The simple answer is all Icom gear is good. Going to the field day would give you a good chance to have a look at the radio, play with it and talk to the people selling. Chances are you will get some sort of a deal.

And their 000 calls are being handled by Tamworth. This is a crazy situation that will end in tears. The 000 calls need to be going to the same centre as the radio jobs are being dispatched from.

My understanding was that hardware was the difference, due to US Congress legislating that the scanners could not be modified to receive "cellular" transmissions.

Unfortunately it's not the software Mark, it's the hardware. Scanners for use in the US must be manufactured so they can't be modified to allow reception of the 800MHz mobile phone allocation over there. The end result is modified hardware to ensure they can't be modified. I am thinking the added co...
